ACS/MWS/WMU/SDU/WSU NATIONAL REUNION MELBOURNE MARCH 2010
5 ACS Branch News for Wings Winter Edition 2008.
5 ACS Branch
The Combined Airfield Construction Squadrons’ National Reunion at Tweed Heads on 10 to 13 March 2008 was a great success with 250 members and their ladies getting together once more, to enjoy the hospitality of the Queensland Branch. Our banners took pride of place on the stage and the WA Branch set up shop with caps, shirts and copies of We Prepared The Way with author Ian Croft in attendance to sign the books. At the special price of $10 we procured a stock which are available from treasurer Larry Kovalevsky at 02 9889 0575.
The dinner on Tuesday night was excellent and Peter Ashley told us about the part Qantas aircrews played in 1942 in Port Moresby and other war zones to help supply the troops in those dark days, Peter’s father being one of them. Some of them operated from Wards Drome, which 5 ACS was building at the time. The cruise on the Wednesday was most enjoyable and we all had plenty of time to meet old mates. A very hot topic of conversation at the reunion was the proposed renaming of the Learmonth Airport to the Ningaloo Airport at Exmouth in WA. As this airport was named after Wing Commander Charles Learmonth who lost his life in tragic circumstances off Rottnest Island in January 1944 after being awarded a DFC for his actions in the Battle of the Bismarck Sea in March 1943, we are very much opposed to any move to change the name of Learmonth Airport, which was the very last airfield 5 ACS worked on before being disbanded in 1974.
